Rumor: BlackBerry 9650 Essex Delayed Again? Renamed as Bold?

blackberry-tour-and-tour2The rumors have started flying about the upcoming revision to the BlackBerry Tour line. Many users are awaiting the release of the BlackBerry 9650 (Codename Essex) which is supposed to replace the trackball on the Tour 9630 with an optical touchpad along with adding Wi-Fi and a faster processor. RIM even (sort of) announced it on Facebook before retracting it.

Dan @MobilitySite got a solid tip that the Verizon actually did send the 9650 to stores, which we heard rumors of before, but they were sent back for updates. Verizon does not plan on releasing the 9650 until they release the official OS 5.0 for the Tour 9630. I can understand that because of the uproar it would cause from people who purchased the original Tour.

The last part of the rumor is the real kicker. Dan’s source told him that they will not be calling the 9650 the Tour2. Rather it will be called the Bold 9650. Al Sacco over @CIO.com also agrees that RIM should change the Tour name to Bold.

What do you think?

  1. Ditching the bad connotations of the Tour name no doubt

  2. Personally, I broke my Tour1 in January and haven’t hooked it back up. I’m working on my Curve 8330 but am getting really pissed off with this crap. VZW should do something for other Tour1 owners because this phone is coming out less than a year after the original.

Secondly, the ONLY reason why I’m with VZW is for their great service. As far as they go with OSes for phones, they are ridiculous with their BULLSNIT testing. I mean, OS 4.5.0.138 came out for my 8830WE “OFFICIALLY” by VZW almost a year after I already had a beta running on my device. I have 5.0 on my Tour1 and other providers have released it already officially. VZW needs to get off their butts and just push it out. From what I’ve been reading on other forums, they’re going to start losing customers due to this crap. Some people I know are already switching to the DROID line of phones with any provider because of this OS and releases of new BlackBerry phone BS from VZW.

  3. Well in my opinion if it looks like a Tour and Tastes Like Tour it must be a Tour. I mean its modeled off of the CDMA Tour and its mostly a Tour the Bold series is a GSM device. But then again whats in a name just release it …………

  4. Absent of branding most non hardcore BlackBerry users would be hard pressed to pick an Essex from a Bold 9700. I say just get the thing on the street, I don’t care what name or number. BUT, if I were RIM I would call it Bold 9750.

As for OS 5 on the 9630, I’ve been running 5.0 on Verizon on my 9630 for MONTHS with no issues phone, BIS, or BES. They launched 5.0 on the Storm before they started selling Storm2 (okay, by like 3 or 4 days) so wouldn’t surprise me if a official 9630 OS 5 launches first. BUT if Esse is ready to go before hey would be stupid to wait.
