RIM Patents Methods for Advertising in Email

Now this is coming out of left field. I know RIM has been working on an advertizing platform for 3rd party applications but this is new. GoRumors spotted a new patent by RIM for a SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR INCORPORATING MULTIMEDIA CONTENT INTO A MESSAGE HANDLED BY A MOBILE DEVICE. This is specifically “wherein said message is any one or more of an email message, a text message, a multi-media message, a peer-to-peer message, an instant message or a mobile TTY message.”

This makes me wonder if RIM is working on a free version of BIS that will be supported by advertising kind of like Gmail or Yahoo Mail… I know I would not stand for advertising in my emails since I would consider that SPAM. I know some people who find the BIS costs a bit high who might go for such a system. What do you think?

RIM also patented a “SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR EVALUATING ADVERTISING METRICS“ which supposedly will help RIM notice if somebody is trying to bypass their advertising system… This one really has me scratching my head unless it has to do with their 3rd party apps advertising platform.

  1. As long as it’s a free version, that’s cool.

  2. I do not want advertising in my emails either.
