BBC Releasing News & Sports Applications Later This Year

bbclogo At MWC the BBC announced that they will be releasing both a news and sports application for BlackBerrys. Obviously they will be launched after their iPhone app comes out… :( The BBC already has a pretty solid mobile website but these new applications promise to provide more content. The applications will also be free which is a perk compared to other news publications who are trying to charge for apps.

The news application will include all of the content already found on the BBC website along with live and on demand audio and video. The sports application promises to provide video also of football matches along with on demand video. These features were really mentioned for the iPhone app but hopefully they are also coming for the BlackBerry client.

I just hope the BBC does not block video from streaming to users outside of the UK like it does with their websites iPlayer…

… TV is not free in the UK – everyone who owns a TV has to purchase a license and this money funds the BBC – that is why the iPlayer isn’t available outside the UK as it’s funding is covered by the license fee for UK residents :-)
