Back in November we told you that BIS 3.0 would be adding full 2 way sync with Gmail including deleted messages, read status, and sent messages. Now the team @BBLeaks has scored some more insider info pointing to two new features in the upcoming update supposedly coming in March.
- OpenOffice file support: presentations, text documents and spreadsheets
- Support for WMA (Windows Media Audio)
I don’t know how many OpenOffice users there are out there but the addition of WMA support is huge since many people are stuck with that format.
Still I really wish RIM would push this 3.0 update out the door. I am dying for read/unread sync support for Gmail and Google Apps. The Gmail calendar sync update coming in 3.1 will also be nice along with address book sync for Hotmail and Yahoo.

I agree the sync features with Gmail will be the most important features BIS 3.0 has for me, but I wonder if the OpenOffice support will also support files from NeoOffice, since it’s built on OpenOffice?

It’s great to see that Research in Motion (RIM) are FINALLY adding OFFICIAL support for the OpenDocument Formats, as used by Google Docs, OpenOffice.org, NeoOffice and others (I’ve been waiting for OpenDocument Format support for YEARS!)…
I have a question though – even though these formats are OFFICIALLY supported by the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 3.x, we’d still need a compatible viewer and/or editor (such as DataViz’s Documents to Go), right?

Definitely if you wanted to edit them but to View them that would just work through the attachment handler built into BIS and BES

Hmm, might have to get on DataViz’s case about adding support for the OpenDocument Formats (once RIM OFFICIALLY confirms this feature in the upgrade that is)…
