I woke up to this little tidbit of new. JohnnyB let me know that the BlackBerry App World now has a theme category with 151 free and premium themes. I only see a few vendors in there but I can imagine that the number will grow very quickly.
There are currently only 9 categories for the themes so this section could get crowded really quick. The themes are in App World just like applications so it does not look like they will be getting their own section. Its a great way for RIM to drum up the number of “apps” in App World.

I only count 41 themes…not 151.

I just counted the category counts on the web catalog of App World. Could be that is wrong…

It’s gotta be. I don’t think buying themes from App World is a great idea. What if you have to wipe your phone? App World doesn’t keep accounts, and payment it done via PayPal. You wouldn’t be able to re-download your theme again as App World wouldn’t know you already paid for it after you re-install your OS.

So, does it just show themes compatible with the device you’re using? I don’t see device compatibility listed, just OS version.

It won’t get overly-crowded anytime soon – Research in Motion (RIM) want a whopping $US200 “administration fee” to register as a developer, just so one can distribute FREE themes via BlackBerry App World!
Furthermore, there is a ten application/theme submission and updates count towards this limit!
What a f@#%&$g joke!
Sure, companies like bPlay may distribute content via BlackBerry App World, but those wishing to submit free content are s@#t out of luck (unless of course, you’re willing to spend large amounts of money with no return!)…
