New York Times Releases free BlackBerry App

nytimes-blackberry When I first heard about this I could have sworn that the New York Times already had a BlackBerry app. Turns out they only had a homescreen shortcut. The Times developed this new app in house and it looks pretty good. It is sponsored by UPS for now which probably means that they will not be charging for it in the future (hopefully).

You can find the app at www.nytimes.com/bbapp and more details at this link from your desktop.

The app downloads articles for offline reading which is nice but sadly it only supports the BlackBerry Tour, Storm, Bold, and Curve 8900. Everybody else is expected to make do with their homescreen shortcuts at mobile.nytimes.com.

Please note: Bold 9700 (aka Bold 2) is not yet supported either…

    • Hmmm . . . if it supports the Tour and the 8900, shouldn’t it also support the 9700 as they all have the same resolution screen?

      • It told me my device is not yet supported… Must be because I’m running a hybrid OS.. 9000/5.0.0.238

        • I presume that the different versions are for the different screen resolutions and not because of some intricacy in the specific OS version because it does not compatibility by OS.

The download URL probably redirects when it detects a non-compatible device/OS. If some enterprising soul posted the direct URLs this problem would probably be solved.

Do I need to register for NYTimes.com to use the BlackBerry application?

The application does not require any NYTimes registration, though you will need to log in to your iTunes account in order to download the application from the App Store.
