Tom let me know that Bryan @BBOS spotted an update to OS 4.7.1.61 for the BlackBerry Tour 9630 from Appalachian Wireless and Bluegrass Cellular. Hopefully Verizon will soon release OS 5.0 for the Tour but until then this will have to do.
BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.7.1.117 (Multilanguage)
Package Version: 4.7.1.117
- Applications: 4.7.1.61
- Software Platform: 4.1.0.75
- File name: 9630AMEA_PBr4.7.1_rel117_PL4.1.0.75_A4.7.1.61_Appalachian_Wireless.exe
- File size: 102.16MB
Please confirm in the comments if this works for you
NOTE: Don’t forget to delete the vendor.xml file located in c:program files>common files>research in motion>apploader to install it on a different carriers device.

I’m already running .57(Sprint) on my Verizon Tour. Without some big time gotcha with that OS it’s hard to justify going through the pain of upgrading at such a small bump as is .57 to .61 unless it also comes out as Verizon official.

This is rumored to be the upcoming “official” Verizon Wireless release, too.

I just dl it to phone. I’m on Telus. I would wait till the 5.0 is out. No noticeable change, google maps still can’t find me. I hoping soon 5.0 will be out.

@Chip,
First you have to install the download on your PC. THEN you use DM to install on your Tour.
There are many tutorials on the web for how to install an os on your BlackBerry. Blackberryos.com is probably best site for info.

Copy all – sorry to bother but still having trouble. After dl file – I executed it and installed to PC HD – then opened DM v5.0.1 and clicked “app ldr” the clicked “update software” – the DM recognized the new OS – I unchecked my current OS (4.7.1.40)and checked the new OS (4.7.1.61) and hit next – and got the following msg under update summary – “no software update is required for your device.” Very frustrated with my Verizon Tour and my ability to upgrade the OS! Please help if able…

@Chip:
That is the expected result if you did not delete the “vendor.xml” file before trying to install. Once you delete it DM will allow you to install to a Verizon device. You get the message you do because that OS package is not approved by Verizon.

Deleted the vendor file – rebooted comp – ran DM and the upgrade option – and it still won’t let me upgrade the OS even though DM see’s it to list it as an option – still get the “no software update is req” msg under summary. Any other workarounds? Thanks for all the help!!!

This has been an extremely stable release since I installed it last week!

Yeah, I second that Tom. I also installed it on a friend’s Tour (I am her tech support nerd) and she is much happier with this release too.

@Chip:
Use loader.exe or BBSAK to do your upgrade. Bothe work in many instances where DM fails. Loader.exe is already on your PC so all you have to do is locate and run.

Thanks!!! I found loader.exe in the c:\program files\common files\rim\apploader folder. Just execute it and go from there??? Sorry for all the hassle – just looking for some step by step help from an expert! Thanks again!!! If you can help me get this new OS loaded I’d be very grateful!!!

Great! After your 7:10 post I was hoping you would just try it and it would work. Huzzah, by an hour later you’re back saying it did.
Congrats on your upgrade!
