The Weather Channel Releases Free Ad Supported Version

weatherchannel Personally I get the weather through the free and awesome BBWeather app but options are always good. Quite a few readers let us know that The Weather Channel has released a free ad supported version of their premium ad free app.

Download OTA for Curve, Bold, & Tour: m.weather.com/bbapp
Download OTA for Storm: m.weather.com/stormapp

From their press release:

The Weather Channel for BlackBerry includes interactive radar maps as well as current conditions, hourly, 36-hour and 10-day forecasts to help customers plan their daily and upcoming activities. Customers can share severe weather alerts, current conditions and forecasts with friends and contacts via e-mail or text message directly from the application.  Integration with the BlackBerry calendar and address book allows customers to check weather for daily appointments as well as stored contacts.

  1. I’ve been playing with this on my Storm and my Tour.
    A) the Storm version doesn’t really support the Storm. It treats the touch screen like its a trackball (but its not in compatibility mode) and it won’t flip to landscape mode.
    B) when first launched on Storm I was prompted if I wanted it to locate me (GPS I presume) and it did. Never got that prompt on the Tour.

Its a decent first try but needs work. Weatherbug still beats it hands down.

Holy bloatware! Loaded it on my 8120 and it was 1.9 Mb!

Looks nice, and the ads aren’t intrusive – just one banner ad at the top.

Scrolling through the info is a bit of a pain though, and there are no settings to make it wifi only or even wifi preferred. It will only use your data plan.

  3. Holy Fat Lady Batman!! This is one slow beast at 1.9mb. Has a very nice UI, but had two three issues. 1) The radar map is soooooooo sloooooooooow on my 8900, over Wifi. Just wanting to zoom brings up a slash screen while the clock turns and turns. Generally you have a lot of clock turning on this one. 2) Hitting the BB back button always asks if you want to exit the app. What happened to backing out of menus with the back button? No, you have to use the Menu button to go back, not the back button. Dumb developers! You can use the End Call/Exit button to Exit. 3) In the settings menu you can look for updates. I checked, and it says version 1.0.0 is available to my 1.0, and asked if I wanted to Update. Isn’t 1.0.0 and 1.0 the same thing? Again , dumb developers…

I haven’t noticed where the home screen icon will update or show the temp like it does with both weatherbug and bbweather. Is there a way to get this working?
