Viigo Goes Back to Its Roots – Offers Slim RSS Only Version

viigonews Viigo let me know that they have released a simple RSS only version of their application called Viigo News. I guess they are hailing back to their roots when they were just a awesome RSS reader. The move has me totally confused since they seem to be pushing all of their additional services such as sports and weather but I guess I can see the value of the light version. Sadly this version has the same app name as the regular full version so you cannot have both installed at the same time. It would be cool if they could just make the additional services a module to this news version.

Still if you are tight on device memory and need a lighter version of Viigo check it out at www.getviigo.com/news. Remember to delete your old version first AND reboot. Personally I will be sticking with the regular version for now.

  Cant read polish… What exactly is at the link? Viigo just announced it over the weekend. It was leaked a bit back but I did not see the point in mentioning it before it was released officially.

    Its only news that Viigo release Viigo News, lightweight app only for RSS But the point is that BerryReview & CB wrote news bout that today and “we” two weeks ago :p

In the past couple of years, we’ve seen over 2.4MM Viigo activations, and our servers have delivered over 1.5BB unique articles to users around the world. Needless to say, it’s been busy here.

After having spent the past few months interacting with many of you on Twitter, and personally reviewing the feedback from our incident reports and across a number of forums, two things became apparent to me:

(1) That some of you wanted JUST the best News & RSS experience possible on BlackBerry … and didn’t need the other (albeit very popular) features.
(2) That our challenges with memory constrained devices were causing people who otherwise loved Viigo to have to forego the app.

As a result of this, we launched two rapid initiatives internally:

(1) Viigo News, focused on delivering an excellent News & RSS experience in as efficient a way as possible (memory & device overhead)
(2) The accelerated deployment of some critical memory and performance optimizations for the full Viigo (this is now in Open Alpha at GetViigo.com/Alpha)

Our development team has done a superb job of bringing both these products to market quickly.

I want to reiterate that we do welcome your feedback, as we are committed to being a customer led and customer focused company.

We know we have more work to do, so stay tuned, we have lots more coming

  I believe that you are definitely moving in the right direction. Even on my Tour where memory is not an issue (256 MB), I found that the performance overhead of Viigo was significant, especially since my main need was was for an RSS reader. I will be downloading the “lite” version shortly. Thanks!

It’s still a pretty big app. Almost 1mb pre-install, which will surely increase after install.

  I agree. Serious bloat here. It’s just text that’s being downloaded, with the occasional graphic. Why such an enormous app?
