This option has been available for some time on Optus Australia. (Only problem is that I haven’t been able to test it due to the fact I tend to run un-released beta versions the whole time).

One of our readers dropped this tip on us a day or so ago.

It’s been confirmed that a wireless update will be available on August 25th for the latest BlackBerry Bold 9000 OS via AT&T Wireless.  The OS version will be a 4.6.0.508 being titled a “Maintenance Release” as we all hope it will fix many lags, memory leaks, and overall enhance the whole device’s performance.  It will be available to download via Desktop Manager and over the air via BlackBerry.  Should we not expect OS 5.0 to release officially anytime soon?  There were rumors leaking around for a few days for a new update, but it looks like it has been confirmed to be a wireless update as well, being AT&T’s first time.”

So, all of you that are on AT&T and running a Bold (with lesser FW than listed above), let us know how it works and how long it takes for the update to go through OTA in the comments section below.

I just did the update OTA. I’m having connectivity issues, so I connected to Wi-Fi. The whole thing took about an hour before the BB was working again. The download was in the neighborhood of 9 MB, and only took a few minutes. The device did a backup (and a later restore) for another few minutes. The rest of the time it was loading Java and linking Java and other tasks. The update did a great job of letting me know what it was doing and showing me progress bars and elapsed times. This assured me that the device wasn’t bricked, which I appreciated.
I can see that there are some new functions, including my ability to choose between 2G or 2G/3G networks. I’ve had lots of problems roaming overseas, and I’m already optimistic that this will give me more choice in selecting networks. I also have lots of “call failed” moments, and I think that the 2G option might help me deal with that, if the OS (or the previous one) hasn’t fixed the problem.
