Skylab let me know that they have updated their free LiveTracker application to allow you to launch the remote tracking control via SMS or when your BlackBerry is rebooted. This is not the biggest upgrade in the beta but I really like the LiveTracker application so I was just looking for an excuse to mention it since the beta started.
I am not sure how useful the location sharing features will be once BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 is released officially but the tracking features are nice AND FREE! I just wish they would add in cell tower triangulation so it does not always need to use GPS.
- Free Download: LiveTracker Mobile is available for free non-commercial use – download.
- Free Tracking Server: For storing tracking data we maintain a tracking server – for free.
- Background Tracking: Start LiveTracker and it sends the GPS location to our tracking server.
- Automatic Tracking: On device startup GPS tracking can be fired up automatically.
- Remote Control: Start and stop GPS tracking on your device by sending an SMS.
- Share Location: Send EMail, PIN, SMS, MMS, Twitter message to your location’s map representation.
- BETA TEST: Due to the early stage of this application please report any bugs to us. Thank you.

I really don’t see any use of this app for me. If I want friends/family to know my location, I would call, text email or send my location threw bbm or GM. Maybe some ppl would likes this app. Anyways that’s my 2cents worth.

I figure this would be good for my long motorcycle trips. Then family could see how far along I was without me having to stop and let them know.

These tracking applications are more useful for medium to large businesses rather than ‘the public’. I had an engineer searching or some weeks to find a reliable tracking application for the Blackberry. We didn’t try this one but waisted so much time with ‘free’ apps.
We struggled to find one which allowed us to own the tracking server part – so we were self contained. The first one to hit all our hot buttons was WatchOverMe’s tracking package. The pilot project has just been accepted by the company and the Watchberry system is now being extended by integrating it with our field services system.
