BerryStore Shutting Down June 15th?

slide_1We mentioned BerryStore a bit back as a 3rd party on device store for BlackBerry. It was recently purchased by Mogees but now I heard from some developers that they sent out a message to all developers that they are terminating the service on June 15th. I guess we don’t really need yet another on device store but competition is always good. They still look like they are live on www.berrystore.com but I am still waiting for an official email back from them.

They sent out this message on Friday:

Dear ________:

We regret to inform you that the BerryStore service will be terminated as of 6/15/09. You don’t need to do anything on your end, but BerryStore will no longer distribute your apps for you after that date. We recommend you distribute your apps through one of the other BlackBerry application distribution platforms like BlackBerry App World. http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/appworld.jsp

If you have added paid apps to BerryStore and had sales, we will make the final payouts sometime before the end of the month.

We would like to thank you for being a BerryStore developer. Best of luck with the success of your applications!

Best,

The BerryStore Team

Too bad, I know some people preferred BerryStore and it certainly had less rules for inclusion. Kind of odd that Mogees would buy it just to shut it down (well, not odd really, happens a lot in business).

As of today, they still have links on their home page asking for Blackberry developers to sign up with them and stating the BerryStore as a distribution channel.

  2. That sucks. I wonder what the issue is. Are they not making $ for their server fees? If not, we should start a fund for them.
