Poynt upgraded to version

090601193441Tom and Nikolaus let us know that Poynt has been updated to version with some major changes added to the popular application. I have to say this application has come far from its early days and it just keeps getting better.  This is after all one of the top favorite apps featured on BlackBerry App world and the best part it is free.

One of the major upgrades inn this release is the addition of white pages.

  • now you can lookup people by name
  • reverse phone lookup
  • reverse lookup by address

White pages may not be as useful as it used to be since most people tend to use cell phones now and not a lot of them are available on reverse look up but it does come helpful when you get phone calls from 1800 numbers and you don’t know who is calling.

Another features that really takes Poynt to a new level is the the movie listing features. It lets you easily see what movies are hot or suck and buy tickets right then and there.

You can now:

  • Look up movies near me
  • Change The date at the top for the movie listing
  • Theaters near me
  • Top 10 movies
  • Look up movies by genre
  • Search  movies by title
  • View movie trailers in 3 different qualities Low, Med, and High resolution with an option to save to SD card (Only on 3G or Wifi)
  • View movie reviews and movie description

One thing that I did notice on my 8900 version is that the search for location icon was replaced by the white pages, which makes it a bit harder to look for directions or an address. In this regard Poynt has taken a step backwards but you can still search for an address and set it as a new search location and map it as well. If you found an easier way let me know along with any other features I may have missed.

To pick up this new release go to because I don’t believe is out in App world just yet.

  1. As far as reverse lookup, you can initiate a lookup directly from the Call Log. If the number is not listed, it returns location and carrier info.

Additionally, this version also adds business and movie listings for Germany — unfortunately, people listings are not (yet?) available.

  2. Poynt is my favorite app for BB… just thought i’d share my 2¢

  3. Hey everyone! Thanks for your interest in Poynt.

Regarding the removal of the “Map It” section, that same functionality exists elsewhere in the app. To map your current search location, click on the location bar at the top, then click the BlackBerry key (just left of the trackball). Select ‘Map Location’.

    • I missed this one, too! It would be more intuitive for the menu item to be one level up (i.e., never thought to click on location before opening menu).

  4. Frustrates the heck out of me that I just installed Poynt from App World and it was v1.1 something. What good is App World if it doesn’t notify me an app I installed from there has a new version available. Argh…..

    Thanks for the info Luis.

  5. Speaking of a step backward, what happened to cell-tower-based location? I don’t see it as an option. Not good news for those like me with Verizon-locked Curves.
