BBTran 1.6.1 – Free Translation Tool Adds Email, PIN, & SMS Translation

Tom let me know that BBTran has seen quite a few updates since the last time we mentioned it in early 2008. BBTran is still free it its basic form and gives you easy to use online translation for phrases, words, and dictionary lookups. It now supports 40+ languages including Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, & more.

I think the coolest feature in this latest version is a new menu item they added to all of your email, PIN, & SMS that lets you translate them at the click of a button. Keep in mind this is a machine translation that uses Google Translate, Systran, FreeTranslation, & Reference.com so its not perfect. On the other hand by offering all 4 they do give you alternative translations.

The caveat is that there are some limits to the free version of BBTran. The main one is that you can only perform 50 translations a day after which you will have to pay $15 a month for 500 translations a day limit. That should not be a big deal for most casual users.

Change log for version 1.6.1:

  • Has new output rich formatting!
  • Optimized for Blackberry Storm usage
  • Supports 4.2.1+ devices
  • has more friendly license activation screens
  • has less bugs
  • app icons are now optimized for any device
  • app icon is changed if application is running on background
  • scrolling issue fixes

  1. FYI, the e-mail, PIN, and SMS integration is in the Pro version only, but you can still cut/paste text for translation using the free version. 😉

  2. Awesome an update already! That’s great!

  3. Ronen, thank you for the review on this popular web site 😉 that’s my favorite BB resource indeed.

I just wanted to make a correction that at this moment Pro version is a one-time payment but not a month based subscription.

Pricing model can change to subscribtion in future but for sure all existing customers of Pro will have no time limit on their licenses.

  4. Seems like it can be a cool app.. but it didn’t work on my 8900, kept saying it couldn’t connect to server. I tried WiFi, BIS, TCP… nada. translation NOTHING.

  5. This app used to work perfectly on wifi using my 8320, but once the program updated itself it is now unable to find a connection. “Could not connect to server. Please try again and/or Configure Connection Settings”. I tried everything and nothing works. It’s pretty much useless at this point.

  6. Hi everyone.

5 min ago there was a service outage on the hosting provider and I’ve resolved it. Now it runs fine again.

But if you experience any connection issues at any time – please try to run Autoconfiguration wizard (in Settings Screen) and if that does not work – please send a feedback with logs attached (bbtran built in feature)

I really care about smooth connection for bbtran users so would gladly help to resolve every case.
