BlackBerry Niagara Rumors Abound – CDMA World Phone

blackberry8900 Rumors about the BlackBerry Niagara have been floating the internet this weekend. Both BlackBerry Cool & the BoyGenius both caught some details on this CDMA variant of the Javelin 8900 Curve. So far it looks like Verizon will be getting the device before Sprint and it will be sporting EVDO revision A along with quad band GSM/EDGE and UMTS 2100. (In short that means no 3G on GSM carriers in the US if you unlock it) It also looks like this device will not have Wi-Fi like the Storm which is once again just a stupid oversight.

The rumored details:

  • Looks like it will be called the 9630 but not sure if it will get the Curve moniker
  • 8900 Curve/Javelin like form factor
  • OS 4.7.1 or 5.0 based on release date
  • No Wi-Fi
  • EVDO Revision A so you can talk while the internet works with lower latency
  • GSM/GPRS/EVDO 850/900/1800/1900 & UMTS 2100
  • 3.2 Megapixel camera
  • 1400mAh battery
  • Browser with JavaScript 1.6 support

Was tentatively planning on picking this up but it’s a no-brainer to include wifi these days. Guess I’ll wait for the next one.

I have been waiting patiently for something from Blackberry on Verizon that includes wifi, my patience is growing thin with big red.

So this article is saying that the Blackberry Niagra is the CDMA Curve 2, and not the CDMA Bold?

I guess, if you have unlimited Data, you wouldn’t need WIFI! However, I also say that having WIFI is a cool thing on a BB.

Who is saying that EVDO Rev A enables simultaneous voice and data? That’s sure what the statement “EVDO Revision A so you can talk while the internet works with lower latency” would seem to imply, which I’ve not seen any technical authority indicate is true about ANY EVDO.

  8. I will be picking this up as soon as it is available. I am very upset that Verizon has decided to cripple this device. I can see where they are coming from, but minutes are so cheap these days that I don’t think most people will be willing to fuss with VOIP when they have 2100 minutes to blow through each month…

Although REV A can technically support simultaneous voice and data, the carriers don’t support it.

EVDV definitely supports this feature, but the CDMA providers in the US decided not to deploy it.

I’m not convinced that simultaneous voice and data is a must have feature but it’s nice to have for the more hardcore among us. Just what did we do with ourselves 2 years ago when this feature was all but absent?

    A quick definition of EVDO.

It means EVolutionary Data ONLY. The marketing people didn’t like that so they changed ONLY to optimized.
So there’s no simultaneous voice and data on EVDO.

  11. You dont need wi-fi when you have the best 3G network and cover 85% plus of your customer base!!!!
