Verizon Adds Alltel-like Friends & Family Plan – Choose 5 Numbers to Call Free on Qualifying Plans

Verizon has not only acquired Alltel, but now they are also adding some of their best features. They now have a new Friends & Family plan kind of like T-Mobile’s MyFaves but without the extra cost. On an individual plan, it lets you choose up to 5 numbers on any network to call free without using your minutes. They also have a version for family plans which gives the whole family a choice of 10 numbers on any network that they share. The coolest part is that this is free on qualifying plans! I can’t wait to see if other carriers follow suit…

Existing Verizon customers can visit www.verizonwireless.com/myverizon to sign up for My Verizon and check their eligibility for Friends & Family. Once you make a change to your Friends & Family numbers, the new numbers will be effective the following day. Verizon will be making this available for business customers later this quarter. With this offering, business customers will have the convenience of managing their Friends & Family through the My Business online account management tool. Not sure what number of friends they will be limited to…

Details below from their press release

According to Verizon, there is no charge to sign up and no charge, ever, to make changes to their Friends & Family calling directory. Customers wanting to take advantage of Friends & Family must have a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Single Line plan with 900 or more Anytime Minutes or a Nationwide Family SharePlan with 1,400 or more Anytime Minutes. Customers on an eligible Nationwide Single Line plan, which starts at $59.99 monthly access, may select up to five numbers to add to their Friends & Family directory. Customers on an eligible Nationwide Family SharePlan, starting at $89.99 monthly access for the first two lines, may select up to 10 numbers for their Friends & Family directory to share among account users. Nationwide plans include Unlimited Night & Weekend minutes, no domestic roaming or long distance charges, and access to Mobile Web. Verizon Wireless customers also enjoy unlimited Mobile to Mobile calling with America’s largest calling family of more than 80 million customers.

  1. Okay, nice and all, but hey Verizon how about fixing your web and mobile tools so they don’t report these and other no charge minutes when I check my minutes used?

  2. Interesting thing is that there is considerable controversy as to whether the Nationwide BlackBerry plans qualify (there is no link on the website as there for the Nationwide voice only plans) — the legacy America’s Choice BlackBerry clearly do not! I am not getting a straight answer from VZW as to the exact differences, except for the fact that I most likely would lose other legacy “features” (e.g., Office Message Alert, UNLIMITED [as opposed to new 5 GB per month cap] Broadband Access Connect [aka tethering], ???). VZW continues to tie feature availability to specific plans — in theory, features should be plan independent so that they could be added to or deleted from plans at any time.

  3. VZW should make this avail on the lower plnas too such as the indiv 39.99 plan.

TMO has myFaves (300 min) for 39.99.
