T-Mobile Pitching UMA to Businesses with Meru Networks
T-Mobile has been really pushing the envelope with UMA and I have to say I am impressed. I had a chance to try out a T-Mobile 8220 over UMA in my apartment that has no T-Mobile reception and it worked like a charm. It is also great for traveling internationally and making calls free over WiFi!
On the other hand, sometimes T-Mobile confuses me with their partners. They just partnered with Meru Networks to help companies deploy UMA. I can see that Meru will gain, but UMA works over practically every enterprise WiFi system including Aruba and other big players.
According to PhoneScoop, Meru’s solution “shares a single channel blanket, using controller-based air traffic coordination to avoid AP-to-AP roaming.” Personally, I have found that most enterprise WiFi systems are capable of passing you from one WiFi access point to another… Maybe they are targeting large businesses that are buying wireless Linksys routers from their nearest Best Buy?
