FAQ: Document Formats Supported By Documents To Go

documentstogo Documents To Go brought actual document editing and viewing to the BlackBerry on a larger scale. With OS 4.5 we were finally able to open Word, Excel, & Powerpoint files from our BlackBerrys and download them to our SD cards. The problem was that the first version of Documents To Go did not support Office 2007 files. This was corrected in the latest versions.

RIM published a great knowledge base article detailing which versions can open which document files from certain applications. I thought it was worthy of sharing.

From the knowledge base:

Research In Motion supports Documents To Go on BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 4.5 and later. Documents To Go allows you to edit Microsoft® Word, Microsoft® PowerPoint®, and Microsoft® Excel® files directly on the BlackBerry smartphone.

Documents To Go allows you to open and modify Microsoft Word files created using any of the following applications:

  • Microsoft Word 97, 2000, XP, & 2003
  • Microsoft Word 98, 2001, & 2004 for Mac OS®

Documents To Go version 1.000 Standard Edition is included with BlackBerry Device Software 4.5 and allows you to open and modify Microsoft PowerPoint files created using any of the following applications:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97, 2000, XP, & 2003
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98, 2001, & 2004 for Mac OS®

Documents To Go version 1.000 Standard Edition is included with BlackBerry Device Software 4.5 and allows you to open and modify Microsoft Excel files created using any of the following applications:

  • Microsoft Excel 97, 2000, XP, & 2003
  • Microsoft Excel 98, 2001, & 2004 for Mac OS®

BlackBerry Device Software 4.6 contains Documents To Go Standard Edition 1.001 and adds the following features:

  • Support for native Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files and email attachments:
    • Microsoft Word 97-2007 and 98-2008
    • Microsoft PowerPoint 97-2007 and 98-2008
    • Microsoft Excel 97-2003 & 98-2004
  • Viewing and editing capabilities
  • InTact Technology™ – retains original document formatting in edited files

Your information is incorrect. DTG doesn’t support Office 2007 formatted documents until you hit 1.005 which is the first version to officially support it. 1.005 was released the same day as the Bold hit the market. Attempting to open a .docx file that was created in Office 2007 and saved in Office 2007 format will produce an error.

1.004 that comes with the Storm supports some formatting of Excell 2007 but not all.

  2. Good to know! Looks like you may have one upped RIM since the specs above are from them :)
How is 1.005 going so far?
