YoGen Hand Powered Charger Coming Soon

yogen-pic2 Tashanna sent me a link to a really cool product that is coming soon. It is a hand powered charger called the YoGen that you charge by repeatedly pulling a cord. They describe the motion as similar to a Yo-Yo string. While the self retracting cord is pulled an alternator continuously spins generating power to charge your phone.

It has a built in 650mAh battery which you charge by pulling. It then has a MiniUSB connector to charge your phone. Sadly I could not find any information on how many times you need to pull the cord to make a significant charge. I remember BlackBerry Cool reviewed such a device a bit back and they had to crank it for 15 minutes for it to make a dent.

Hopefully this is a simpler solution but I would not get my hopes up. They are planning to pilot it in March with full production output starting April 9th. No word on price but solar seems to be the option with less effort involved. On the other hand this could be really cool…

  1. I bet the cord breaks before the battery’s half charged. What a Mickey Mouse scheme.

  2. Seems like more of a time waster than anything else. I can’t imagine EVER being so desperate for my Blackberry to buy AND carry one of these things with me! Yeah, now a solar panel that I could unfold and plug in for some quick free juice, THAT I would be interested in. I just don’t see me carrying this thing around with me.
