Are You The “BlackBerry Guru” In Your Social Circle?

duckinacircle I can’t count the times I have been asked by friends and family to help them with their BlackBerry or any cellphone. The questions usually start with:

  • How do you do…
  • I can’t…
  • Could you…
  • My _____ is broken can you help me fix it?
  • Etc…

I was reading a funny article on CrunchGear by John Biggs detailing his 4 methods of getting out of helping people with their new Christmas presents (I am contemplating moving to Detroit) and thought I would ask: Do you try to get out of helping people or are you like me and try to save the world from BlackBerry madness. Johns 4 “D”s might be a surefire way to get out of the chore.

On the other hand if you are like me and try to help how do you do it? Do you send them to the forums? Do you do it yourself since they are incompetent? Do you try to teach them? This is kind of like the adage “give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him to fish…”

  2. Of course, being the Blackberry junkie I am, I’m always being asked how to do stuff or passing on tips. Hey, I think it’s our charge to help out the newbies… especially since we all pay at least 20 bucks extra per month to say we are Blackberry owners.

  3. Yep. im Blackberry user from half year, and i love this device’s. Now im Mod at Polish BB forum, so im get asked verry often bout problems, tips and so on with Blackberry’s.

  4. I’m the one that gets all the qiestions. I reply (usually) that I can try to help but don’t know it all. When I do help, it is in person and not me driving the keyboard as learning is best retained when the student is instructed while doing. On stuff I don’t know, I point them to various forums and ask them to let me know the answer when they find it (so I can learn too!).

  5. I know quite a few people with bb’s and I know the most of any of them. The funny thing is I think most people are content to just use their bb LIKE A NORMAL PHONE! Some people… Gosh. I tell them how I’ve tweeked my phone or got the latest OS and they don’t seem interested. I’ve found you can’t really teach someone something they’re not interested in so I just leave it alone. They know where to find me.

Yeah… im that guy lol , i been building computers since i was 12 ( 10+ years ) and i been dealing with blackberrys and even un-brick i phones, When people find out your “the computer guy” i get swamped with questions at work all the time , no need to pay a tech anymore “ask the computer guy” lol

    • I know what you mean! (I saw a hoodie at that says “I will not fix your computer” – I want it!)

      My gf’s dad just got a Storm. He’s never had a Berry, he upgraded from some Moto pos phone. Everytime I’ve seen him over the last 3 weeks, it’s “Hey, I’ve got a question…” I like helping out, and like someone else said, it’s a lot better to show them to do it themselves.

  8. I love Blackberry and the Blackberry phones. I have a pearl currently, and I work as a wc for Alltel. I have had some training from RIM and also learn so much from websites such as this one, so that I can help my customers as well as friends. I help all sorts of BB users, newbies, etc, even if they are contracted with other carriers, I just love the Blackberry and all it represents, including a life more convenient and more in line with communication. I don’t mind answering questions or arranging one on one blackberry 101’s with people interested. I’d like to think I’m enhancing the lives of others one Blackberry at a time!

I’m a fairly new BB user, had mine going on 5 months now and I’ve become one super BB geek… always checking the forums, looking for new tutorials and guides and at work I’m always willing to help someone with their BB, which means not only programming it but also basic BB knowhow. I’m also giving them forum pages to check out as well as RIMs site for any troubleshooting needs. Guess you can say I’m an o.k guy. LOL

  10. I have been a true Blackberry Addict since i first encountered them in 1999 when I joined an agency that lived and died by them. I bought my first pc in 1984 (cost more than my first car). I love to be the guru and help but i really only like to answer the same question (from the same person) twice. Once for the information and then to reinforce. After that, its clear that they are not really listening. I find that everyone learns and acquires information to their own limits and ability. I like to help them stretch that limit.
