Opera Mini, an alternative browser for us Blackberry users (and it is also available on many other J2ME platforms), jumped into final release version of 4.2.

Here is a list of new features directly from operamini.com. You can download Opera Mini straight to your Blackberry by visiting the link from your device. If you have downloaded the beta version before, don’t forget to uninstall it first.

New in Opera Mini 4.2

Skins

Personalize Opera Mini by choosing a new colorful skin.

Video

We are working to make video content available on more phones through Opera Mini. If you have a new Sony Ericsson or Nokia phone, the chance is high that you can take Opera Mini for a spin on m.youtube.com.

Performance

Opera Mini 4.2 can use our newly established server park in the US. This means significantly faster page page downloads for users in the Americas and Asia-Pacific region.

Sync your Notes

Opera Link support for notes, allowing users to sync their notes between the PC and Opera Mini.

  1. Note: You can use Opera Mini EVEN IF you don't have a Service Book for the built-in browser. I have a second BlackBerry I use for travelling (keeping one on "home" service and one on "local"). Of course without a BIS plan many functions will not show up (Blackberry Maps, for example) but you can use Opera Mini to download other non-service-book applications such as Google Maps instead.

It's worth considering in case of an emergency (and most Vodafone international locations supply at least GPRS data with their SIM's at the airport….)

  3. Wait, can someone confirm this? Will I really not be able to download w/in the browser? If that’s the case, I don’t plan on upgrading.

Its true. When i install Opera via PC, i was’nt able to download stuff on my phone. But when download Opera via Blackberry browser, im able to save pages, download mp3s etc. (My BB OS is 4.5).

  5. What the hell?! With 4.2 you can't download within the Opera browser?! And you can't downgrade to 4.1?! Thanks a lot, Opera.

  6. I tried the beta and discovered that I could no longer paste urls into the address "bar". Is that still the case in the release version, or did they fix that?

All of a sudden when I pressed the menu button in 4.1 menu would flash on and off. Wiped it and installed 4.2. Same thing. Can’t use menu on this buggy program any more?
