Thanks to everybody for sending these in. Not sure how we missed it but according to BusinessWeek the firm iSuppli gutted the Bold and found that the parts cost $158.16 and with the assembly cost should total $169.99. That is a pretty penny compared to the $103 spent on the Curve but nothing compared to the $799 that it is going for on CompUSA’s website. I thought BestBuy was a bit high but $799 is unbelievable. Even the internal AT&T docs revealed a non commit price of $549.99.
Interesting to note in the iSuppli tear down of the Bold:
- A Marvell chip that runs wireless connections and applications – Price $34
- Surprisingly the camera in the Bold cost RIM almost $10!!!
- Samsung Screen (Gorgeous) costs $16
- Samsung Memory that cost $10.45
Check out the details of the teardown at BusinessWeek
Thanks DavidB for sending this one in!

Lets not forget that they have to pay those people that constantly fix our bugs and come out with new firmwares every 1~2weeks?
Let’s not forget that they have to maintain the bis and bes servers.
Let’s not forget about their marketing expenses…
Their engineers behind all this ideas…
Designers…
I’m sure it comes up more than just 169.99.
Do 170 + one time server fee + engineer fee + lifetime bug fix + designer fee + marketing fees… it should be at least $300 i’d say

Obviously but $169.99 is the fixed costs that cannot be avoided to make the device. The rest of what you mention are variable. The gap between even $300 and $799 is still pretty big.
