7-Zip – The Must Have Free Desktop Zip/Unzip Utility

7ziplogo I know that this is not a BlackBerry tool but I decided to mention it anyway. Quite a few themes and applications are released in a .zip format making a free unzip utility a must have. Especially when users start running into the more commonly found .RAR & .7z extensions for compressed archives.

The one tool that will help you compress and un-compress practically every archive is 7-Zip. It has a simple installer for practically every variant of Windows. It also has unofficial packages for everything from Mac OS X to FreeBSD.

    7-Zip is a fantastic utility. Light, fast, and highly flexible. Great add to any users’ repertoire.

    Another great free compression program that uses the 7-Zip algorithm is jZip at http://www.jzip.com/

    It has an interface similar to WinZip and is really easy to use, although not quite as robust as 7-Zip.

    If you’re looking for an archive extraction utility that works on nearly EVERY type of archive format, you should check out Universal Extractor! It will not create archives, but it will extract files from all kinds of archive files including installers.

    I’ve been using 7-Zip for over 6 months and it’s very user friendly. There are many movies I wouldn’t have been able to view on my Curve without it.

    7-Zip is very good, I prefer and use WinRar, but I do recommend 7-Zip to people.
