"BlackBerry Partner Technical Support has noted an increase in a number of calls coming through to RIM regarding customers upgrading to the 4.5 version of device software by using the version available for download directly from our BlackBerry site. Unfortunately this software is only compatible with unbranded devices or devices purchased directly from RIM, so in other words, for devices branded from a carrier this download will not function correctly.

RIM is presently looking into the matter and will amend the download site accordingly. "

I'm on Orange UK and the 'pin number check' said that it was not supported by my carrier so I tried the web update and it upgraded the phone to 4.5 anyway! The phone works fine so the Orange UK support people must be getting trained up to support the new OS 4.5 before the public get the upgrade – I presume...?!?

[...] Check If OS 4.5 Is Officially Available For Your Device By PIN # | BerryReview.com » Looks like the Web Upgrade for OS 4.5 we mentioned before is limited by your PIN # and its association with your carrier. If your carrier does not officially support OS 4.5 then this is useless. In essence this Web Based option just helps people to upgrade their OS officially. Talk about a letdown… ______________________ FoneJunkie We would worry much less about what people thought of us if we realized how seldom they did. [...]

RIM should just release the OS as a global OS. Exactly like the beta releases... That way everybody will be able to use the same OS. It would also make developers lives much easier.

OS 4.5 has been released by multiple carriers worldwide. RIM HAS released it in many different versions. September was a guess for US carriers. US carriers go through their certification process and release through RIM when they are ready.
