Check If OS 4.5 Is Officially Available For Your Device By PIN #

Looks like the Web Upgrade for OS 4.5 we mentioned before is limited by your PIN # and its association with your carrier. If your carrier does not officially support OS 4.5 then this is useless. In essence this Web Based option just helps people to upgrade their OS officially. Talk about a letdown…

In RIM’s own words:

The Application Loader tool lists available BlackBerry Device Software upgrades that are approved by the BlackBerry smartphone user’s wireless service provider.

You can check it OS 4.5 is available base on your PIN # at this link:
https://www.blackberry.com/hhupgrade/

RIM has also posted the following three knowledgebase articles about the Web Based Upgrade:

RIM September is almost over… Why can’t you release 4.5 already?

Details from the first knowledgebase article below:

BlackBerry smartphone users can upgrade the BlackBerry Device Software on their BlackBerry smartphones by using the Application Loader tool available at www.blackberry.com/upgrades. This upgrade process does not require the use of the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager. The Application Loader tool lists available BlackBerry Device Software upgrades that are approved by the BlackBerry smartphone user’s wireless service provider.

Web-based BlackBerry Device Software upgrades allows BlackBerry smartphone users to perform the following tasks:

  • Upgrade the BlackBerry Device Software on their BlackBerry smartphones
  • Add or remove applications and support for languages
  • Back up and restore BlackBerry smartphone data
  • Switch from one BlackBerry smartphone to another BlackBerry smartphone
  • Turn notifications about available BlackBerry Device Software upgrades on and off

To perform a web-based BlackBerry Device Software upgrade, the following system requirements must be met:

  • BlackBerry smartphone must have at least 32 MB of flash memory
  • Computer must be running Windows® 2000 or later
  • Computer must have an available USB port
  • Computer must be running Windows® Internet Explorer® 6 or 7

Note: BlackBerry smartphones that are associated with a BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, with BlackBerry® Professional Software, or with BlackBerry® Unite!™ software cannot perform web-based BlackBerry Device Software upgrades.

To perform web-based BlackBerry Device Software upgrades, go to www.blackberry.com/upgrades. For instructions, see KB16068.

  1. OS 4.5 has been released by multiple carriers worldwide. RIM HAS released it in many different versions. September was a guess for US carriers. US carriers go through their certification process and release through RIM when they are ready.

  2. Sith,
This is from BGR slides leaked from AT&T
    http://www.berryreview.com/2008/09/03/official-os-45-blue-8320-coming-to-att-this-month/
Read the bottom of the second slide…
And I quote: Targeted for mid-september

  3. Why yell at RIM? It looks like the carriers are the ones to blame.

  4. Hi BerryReview,

I emailed you a while ago but never heard back, could you please email me I’d like to discuss your website :)

    Thanks

  5. RIM should just release the OS as a global OS. Exactly like the beta releases… That way everybody will be able to use the same OS. It would also make developers lives much easier.

  6. I’m on Orange UK and the ‘pin number check’ said that it was not supported by my carrier so I tried the web update and it upgraded the phone to 4.5 anyway! The phone works fine so the Orange UK support people must be getting trained up to support the new OS 4.5 before the public get the upgrade – I presume…?!?

  7. “BlackBerry Partner Technical Support has noted an increase in a number of calls coming through to RIM regarding customers upgrading to the 4.5 version of device software by using the version available for download directly from our BlackBerry site. Unfortunately this software is only compatible with unbranded devices or devices purchased directly from RIM, so in other words, for devices branded from a carrier this download will not function correctly.

RIM is presently looking into the matter and will amend the download site accordingly. “

  8. Has anyone successfully upgraded Curve 8320 from TMobile USA to 4.5? Currently TMobile offers only 4.2.2.180.

    Please advice.

    Thanks
