RIM Now Has 17.4% Of Smartphone Market – Motorola Wants A Piece Of The Action

That is a pretty impressive number considering the fact that last year they only had 8.9%. The smartphone market has grown 15.7% over the last year according to research from Gartner and remain as 11% of the whole cellphone market.

Just for reference, Nokia went down to 47.5% market share from 50.8 last year and Apple went down to 2.8% from 5.3% last year. Gartner makes some excuses for Apple based on the fact that the 3G iPhone only came out in July but Nokia is still finding its way. RIM is looking good with a whole product lineup still waiting to be released this year.

Motorola has decided to rain on RIM’s happy day by claiming that they tried to illegally steal employees from them. The Star quotes: “…claiming RIM improperly sent emails to some and advertised job openings on a truck-mounted billboard at a Motorola plant.” They are seeking over $50,000 in damages which is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of money Motorola is hemorrhaging. Check out the full story at The Star.
