BBSmart Releases Alarms Pro Update

UPDATE: Just got an email from BBSmart with an official changelog:

  • Fixed up miscellaneous bugs affecting 8330 and early OS 4.5 users
  • Reduced battery impact
  • Can now pick unique colors for each alarm
  • Can now change snooze time on the fly
  • Minor graphical tweaks throughout

I was just getting ready to hunker down for the evening, when I received an email from the BerryReview Store. The email was informing me that BBSmart had released a new version of its award winning alarm program. They moved from 1.1 to 1.23 with this update. Since this is a minor update (major being 1.xx to 2.xx) the update is free to anyone who has previously purchased the application. To get this update visit the BerryReview store and click on My Account (or follow the link).

Note: if you purchased the application from a different store, you will have to go to your account settings at that store to get the update for free.

After we reviewed this application back in the beginning of July, we received several comments about features that did not work correctly for some people. Namely, the alarm bringing your Berry out of powered down mode, as well as not being able to silence the alarm without first unlocking it. Unfortunately, it looks like this update did not address either of these issues. There is also still the issue with the SAME 4 horrible alarm sounds.

The majority of updates however, have been cosmetic. They added the ability to customize each alarm color, they cleaned up the look of the “create alarm” screen. I know there is something else that looks different, but I cannot quite place it.

If you guys happen to notice anything else, please let us know!

  1. Hi Nate,

Just to clarify a couple of things:

The main aim with this release was to get out something as quick as possible so those 8330 users and people using early OS 4.5 releases could use the software. The other bits and pieces of functionality were just some quick “tid-bits” that I could put in that would not hold up development time further. To that extent, if you weren’t one of the affected users initially then yes the changes probably do appear a little cosmetic in nature 🙂

Regarding silencing the alarm without unlocking: blame RIM. They lock down that functionality to third-party developers despite the fact that their own alarm program can do it. Yes, I have told them they suck.

Waking up the device to sound the alarm is a gray-area. If it is possible, it’s buggy in numerous OS releases, and once again you’ve got RIM to thank for that. I’m working through it though slowly and might be able to get there for the next upgrade.

Re: In-built alarm sounds: horses for courses. Most people like them 🙂

  2. As far as “Regarding silencing the alarm without unlocking: blame RIM”, there is a work-around (and an excellent one, at that!) for users that use holsters or cases with the built-in magnet. Simply enable the “Silence When Unholstered” option — I have the option enabled for my default for both regular as well as quick alarms. Users on a BES with mandated passwords find all these features… 😉

  3. I think one of the greatest things about this app is the ability to use your RINGTONES from your memory card to customize different alarms.
I don’t think the “included alarms” should be an issue. 🙂

  4. You can can “update” from the application, just click on “about” and scroll to check updates. 🙂

  5. There is one other functionality missing – it doesn’t work on the Bold (yet).

  6. Ok I just downloaded the app. The color changes for the alarms are nice, but quite unnecessary.

Is there any way to download the previous version somewhere?

Thx neil n BReview. Still a great alarm app

  7. Can someone explain where Artie is working from? I tried on my curve and cannot get to an update menu.

  8. For Update, open About menu, and scroll down… 😉

  9. I keep getting an error message http error 404 :Not found try loading a different page. But at least I found where you were. I was going to “ABOUT” in the phones Options menu. Thanks to the both of you.

  10. Odd… I have never had any problem with Alarms Pro on my 8830 and I have had every beta OS you can imagine.
