From the mobile.blackberry.com download site: "AOL Instant Messenger for BlackBerry and ICQ for BlackBerry are not compatible with your smartphone and/or supported by your wireless service provider. Please contact your service provider for details."

Translation: Why allow users to utilize a free service that only uses data (which they already pay for) when we can have them pay additional for an unlimited SMS package in order to use our SMS-based AOL client?

... so you need to ask VZW the question.

@Tom: Why is that? I was going to ask about getting AIM on my 8830 but that pretty much closes that door. I've got my GTalk but I'd really like AIM. I have the article that shows you how to use Jabber to include other IM client contacts in your GTalk contact list but haven't tried that solution yet. I think I need to hunker down one night and do it but I would LOVE to have a native AIM client on my BB.

At least the native clients are an option for you. AIM cannot be installed on a VZw device. ;)
