BlackBerry 4.6 JDE Public Beta Released!

Richard just let me know that the BlackBerry 4.6 JDE (Java Development Environment) was just released in public beta. This has to be a first for RIM. A public beta. Who would have thought… RIM IS listening!

Developers have been complaining to RIM for quite awhile that OS 4.6 and the Bold are right around the corner. The problem is that other than some RIM partners, many developers did not have the BlackBerry 4.6 JDE Beta to develop or update their applications for the Bold.

Well the tides have turned. RIM does not seem ready to do an official release but a public beta is better than nothing.

You can pick up the public beta from:

Now the big issue that developers are going to run into is that there is still no simulator available for the 4.6 OS to test the applications on. That means that unless you have a Bold your out of luck when it comes to testing. On that same note RIM has yet to release a OS 4.5 simulator to the public… My mistake. Turns out that the device simulators are now bundled into the JDE for the 4.5 and 4.6 OS versions.

  1. The Bold (9000) simulator *is* included with JDE 4.6.

JDE 4.5 includes the following simulators:

  2. I stand corrected. 🙂 it has been awhile since I played with the blackberry JDE.the simulators up to 4.3 were packaged seperately… My bad

  3. Well, kudos to RIM for getting a public beta out there. It really makes a big difference *for everyone* to have early access to development tools before hardware hits the street. Some other company recently found out how successful new product launches can be when there’s a thriving application ecosystem available on Day One.

According to RIM support on their new developer forum, 4.6 is addressing many issues that developers have been requesting, such as finally allowing access to the screen’s indicator area.
