MetrO for BlackBerry Beta – Free Subway & Metro Directions

Josep just sent me a link to the launch of the MetrO for BlackBerry beta. The application lets you get public transit information for over 400 cities stored on your BlackBerry. Sadly it does not have the transit maps but it gives you very detailed and customizable directions on how to take public transportation. I think the coolest part is that the directions are stored on the device so no excessive bandwidth. Hopefully it will let you store them on an SD card soon.

You can get a basic idea of the application in the images below:

I am currently loving this on my BlackBerry. I take the subway every day so this is very useful when I need to go somewhere new. The best part is that since it does not require a data connection after the initial install it will work in the subway.

You can see a detailed walk through at this link or you can download the beta OTA at this link: http://download.nanika.net/MetrO.jad

Sadly I don’t live in a City with a Subway. Can anyone write how Google Maps 2.2 that now includes Public Transit info compares to this, or other apps with Subway directions? Google Maps provides good Bus and Light-rail info for me, but I haven’t tried it in a Manhattan like environment.

Hi, Nikolaus. I used to have MétrO in my Palm, it is a very good application. It has no maps, but you don’t need them. The directions are very clear. Their database for São Paulo, Brazil, is not very thorough, but it’s quite accurate. There is a Web-based implementation that you can test for yourself. It’s a whole different user interface, but the databases and directions are the same: http://i-metro.mobi
