CIO.com Shows Off Some BlackBerry Know-How
Al Sacco wrote a great reference on CIO.com about 5 features on your BlackBerry that not everybody knows about. He even provides you with the order of keypresses that you have to perform to get to each feature. Some of these are features I use every day.
The 5 features covered are:
- Switching between applications
- How to view the BlackBerry Event log and free up memory by clearing it
- Soft rebooting your BlackBerry
- Change the signal strength display from bars to numbers
- And finding the “help me” screen
NOTE: If these shortcuts are truly new to you they I highly advise checking out Stinsonddog’s BlackBerry Tips PDF files which can be found at the bottom of the page at this link. That reference is much more thorough and will really give you a great foundation for utilizing all the shortcuts on your BlackBerry. I will probably post more about Stisonddog’s tips at a later date.

I tried the “Change the signal strength display from bars to numbers” and what happened on my T-Mo 8320 is that the bars went blank. I never got any numbers their, neither on EDGE nor UMA. I was really hoping this would work with UMA, but it doesn’t work at all it seems.
Can anyone else tell me if they got this to work?

I’ve done it on my VZW 8830 and it works. But I preferred bars so I switched it back.

I have a T-Mobile Curve 8320, and I am able to change the signal bars to numbers without any issue. However, the numbers appear only in black, so if you’ve got a dark background or wallpaper, you won’t be able to see them. Try changing your wallpaper to a light color. Also, your problem could have to do with the theme you’re using. The shortcut works fine for me using the BB Dimension Zen theme with a light-colored background.
