Vlingo & Yahoo Add Voice Recognition To OneSearch

YahooonesearchvoiceVlingo, not to be mistaken with the Vringo offering we just mentioned, is a voice recognition firm. They have just helped Yahoo come out with a new voice powered search service for Yahoo OneSearch. Knowing Yahoo the application will probably be great but it will be a resource and bandwidth hog.

Devin has some first impressions posted on BBcool if you are interested. According to him the voice recognition works pretty well.

Personally I have never seen voice recognition work well on any device even a computer. One of them first things I remove from every new BlackBerry is the voice recognition due to the annoying “Say A Command” prompt. Hopefully somebody will prove me wrong with a useful and practical application. The closest I have found so far was SimulScribe but even they tell you to speak slowly and enunciate so that they can get the speech recognition right.

You can pick up the new version of Yahoo oneSearch with voice from m.yahoo.com/voice. Let us know what you think.

Install was easy, but haven’t tried it in action yet. Can I ask why Yahoo GO is still in Beta for 3.0? Why would they not include this in with Yahoo GO? If I can comment on Yahoo GO, I used 2.0 and had recurring connection issues on my 8320, and had the same issues with 3.0 Beta. After install I could get data, but after a few used Yahoo GO would be unable to get connection data from my BlackBerry. No other app has ever done this on my phone. Anyone? Bueller?

I’ve been using it for a while on my 8320 with only occasional lack of connection. Actually, I only use the part that accesses my local news much like an RSS feeder. If I find a smaller app that does this I’ll probably remove GO. Maybe I can find a way to get Viigo to grab my local news stories.

I’ve been beta testing the Vlingo software on my 8130. I’m really liking it and the company is very customer oriented in my experience.

Ron, I get local news via RSS all the time. It’s easy. You just have to find a good local news site with a decent feed.
