Is TeleNav Getting Voice Control & Speech Recognition?

AtttelenavgpsNuance just announced that they will be working with TeleNav to get voice recognition in TeleNav’s cellphone products. There is no specific mention of BlackBerry but I know that the BlackBerry offering is one of their flagship mobile devices.

This could get interesting as the BlackBerry fleshes out as more and more of a GPS device. Personally it is not replacing my trusty MIO anytime soon but it is a amazing backup device. It got me out of some really sticky situations in Vermont. The BlackBerry also has an amazing amount of flexibility with applications ranging from Google Maps to TeleNav.

The next hit for TeleNav should be on device maps! It just does not make sense to rely on data services to always be available.

Check out the latest feature list matrix:

TeleNav v5.5 for BlackBerry include “speak in address” and “speak in search” among others. From TelNav’s user forum, “TeleNav GPS Navigator Version 5.5 [for BlackBerry] is an upcoming product. It is coming soon, but I do not have a tentative release date for you.”

BTW, I just noticed one more new feature in the v5.5 features list that is intriguing , namely “Saved Commute Maps”. Might this be the ability to save maps locally on the device’s MicroSD card?!?

I have used telenav. I am suspecting that the device makes a phone call to get this working because this is how similiar function worked about 3 months ago. And it was not very accurate. Can anyone confirm this?
