[...] Yesterday I mentioned BlackBerry PIN exchange that piggybacks on Facebook which may help it survive. I know that RIM is saying that social networking is the future of BlackBerry but currently I don’t see enough interest to spawn off a separate network just for BlackBerry users.
I guess it is a novelty... Maybe like they know your BlackBerrys true identity :)

I just dont see the point. I loose my messenger contacts every time I change devices and there is no desktop interoperablity. Everybody I speak to has to have a BlackBerry and type on the small keyboard.
The worst part about giving out your pin is that the messages automatically go to level1 priority for your profile

Those are two different purposes. You want PIN to be like your e-mail or phone number. RIM wants PIN to be some sort of DRM. Pirating applications in the Blackberry platform is nearly impossible because of PINs.
.
I really don't see any other use for the PIN. The messenger? Please. If two people have Blackberrys, they might as well chat over e-mail. It's instant! Or use some instant messenger like Yahoo or Google Talk.
.
Last week someone was glad to meet a fellow Blackberry user (me) in a generic gadget forum. There are not many Blackberry users in Brazil. She immediately asked for my PIN. I told her the truth: I offered my e-mail address because a) she can reach me just the same; b) I certainly will reply from my desktop whenever possible because I actually avoid writing e-mail with such a tiny keyboard; c) I really would rather not chat over such a tiny device. So I also offered my MSN ID. She never replied again. I wonder if she felt rejected.
.
Once I saw a young woman chat on the phone in the movies, two chairs away from me. During the session. I think that's crazy.
