OtterBox for Pearl 8120 & 8130
One of our readers, Carl, just sent us a tip that OtterBox has released their new case for the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 and 8130 for $49.95.
Below is an extract from their news email:
“OtterBox introduces the slim-fit OtterBox 1936 to protect the BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8120™ and BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8130™ series smartphones from Research In Motion (RIM). With complete access to the trackball, camera, flash, sync/charge and self-portrait mirror, the OtterBox 1936 provides an ideal solution for on-the-go protection with style.
Additionally, three acoustically approved, semi-permeable membrane vents protect the microphone, headset and speaker phone openings, while still allowing clear sound transmission. Cases include a holster-style, swivel belt clip for convenient carrying. The BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8120™ and BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8130™smartphones also feature a magnet proximity sensor to automatically shut off the screen and maximize battery life when stored- this feature is supported with the OtterBox 1936. You won’t find a better case out there!”
If you have not heard about OtterBox and their fantastic range of cases for BlackBerry products either check out our previous reviews or go to www.otterbox.com to see their entire range.
The case I reviewed a few months back now is still the same one I use daily today. Its been dropped, thrown, sat on and abused on a daily basis and still I can not fault it. I’ll probably keep using it and do a long term review on it when 12 months is up… I will keep you posted.

I bought a OB case for my 8820 and love it, but I don’t care for the screen/keyboard skin. I wish they would make one with a clear plastic window instead of the cutout with the skin.

I just got my OB Defender case for the Pearl 8120/30 today and it is everything they are hyped up to be. Very rugged and tough, but also very accessible at the same time. Have not done the “stair test” yet and probably never will purposefully. I installed with the membrane and did not lose a bit of accessibility, however, the camera has a tough time collecting enough light to create a quality image. I plan to modify the membrane around the camera as to allow a clearer image. But all in all the case is exactly what I expected minus the camera.

I made the same modification a little while ago. Easiest and safest way is to draw around the camera opening with a fine tip felt pen then remove the Bb and cut the membrane with a scalpel or similar. Don’t just cut around the opening using your Bb as a back stop (trust me on this
