RobLock - Yet Another BlackBerry Anti-Theft Solution
February 18th, 2008 by Ronen Halevy
I did not realize that the BlackBerry software market was so saturated that developers had to develop the same applications. In the software Anti-Theft area we already have FindIt, PhoneBAK, and a couple other GPS trackers such as Berry Locator.
The guys at D-mobile did not let that faze them and released their less robust RobLock solution for $9.95! Yay!
Features:
-
SMS notification on SIM Change to predefined number Recover contacts from lost phone Does not affect mobile performance in normal operation Tiny installation footprint Easy Configuration Password Protected Settings
Keep in mind you can get FindIt which has many more features for half the price at $4.99.

I don’t think I would like this RobLock application. They are advertising “SMS notification on SIM Change to predefined number”. I don’t think SMS are that reliable. E-mail would be better. I could test it, but I didn’t find any OTA link in Google (you didn’t provide any link to RobLock, Ronen) and I procrastinate a lot when there is no OTA installation. I don’t like to use the Desktop Manager.
.
FindIt looks pretty and is a lot cheaper, but it lacks a very important capability: detecting the current SIM’s phone number and sending it to the phone’s owner. That can really help catch a thief. PhoneBAK does that, but it’s not cheap.
.
It’s a matter of having choices.

I am a user of the phonebak blackberry and been extremely pleased with the establishment of the company with a wider range of coverage in devices when i changed from a HTC pda phone to Curve. If compared to the other products, the price is not the cheapest but the service, media mentions in cnn, cnbc it gives me the assurance that this startup is here to stay.

But I have another, technical angle of this problem….
EMails cannot be sent from a blackberry if the thief is replacing the SIM with another SIM which is not Backberry service enabled. So FindIT is virtually useless.
And I Love the Recover contact feature as the contacts are more valuable to me than the phone itself. So Roblock looks much pretty than the other both. These dexmobile guys are into this field for a long time and their mGuard is the worlds first theft recovery for Java phones. The Windows Mobile version of Roblock is the best theft recovery solution for WM phones.
I found the OTA link > http://www.dexmobile.com/roblock.jad

You got me right there, David. A stolen phone with another SIM is not likely to have Blackberry service and access to e-mail. SMS is better indeed then.

Ya Luciano, heard about the FindIt bug that corrupts all the phone profiles.
By the way, dexmobile released a new version of Roblock with the Remote WIPE feature for both CDMA & GSM users.
The good part is that it doesnt relay on BES and so it will work on non BES phones too….
There is a nice review on this new version at
