NewsGator Go! For BlackBerry Now Free!

NewsgatorgofreeI was just reading a Forbes article one of our readers, Michael, sent in that mentions that NewsGator is now giving away their mobile feed reader for free. The NewsGator Go! application used to cost a hefty $29.99 which was a terrible proposition compared to the free Viigo RSS reader. This may give Viigo a run for its money. This announcement from NewsGator comes on the heels of them giving away the great FeedDemon desktop RSS application for free.

To download the application you need to head on over to NewsGators website to register an account at this link.

Features in NewsGator Go!

  • Intelligent Mobile Optimization: Whether you read 5 or 500 feeds, NewsGator Go! effortlessly manages the load to give you the best experience.
  • Easy, one-hand operation: Navigate and read with the power of one thumb.
  • Formatted for Mobile Devices: The articles and the links are tailored specifically for mobile devices, enhancing the reading experience.
  • Offline Reading: Take your feeds and posts/articles with you. You don’t have to be online to read your feeds because NewsGator Go! caches downloaded feeds on the device.
  • Synchronization: Read a post in NewsGator Go! and it’s marked as read in any other NewsGator reader you use.
  • Clipping Synchronization: Clip and save posts and have them synchronized with NewsGator Online or any other NewsGator reader.
  • Mark Feeds as Read: Mark unimportant or irrelevant feeds and articles as read from your mobile device so you can be more efficient when you get back to the office.
  • Streaming Media Support: Download podcasts or play streaming audio and video from your feeds directly on your devices media player. (Go! for Windows Mobile only)

Hey, haven’t I seen this program before? Sure I have! It’s Freerange, and a better version IMO. This one lets me scroll by line, a dear feature of mine that Freerange removed a while ago.

So this NewsGator thing pretty much amounts to a free unlimited (and arguably) version of the excellent but pricey Freerange. Talk about run for its money, this free app should seriously hurt Freerange, not Viigo! Can they really do that? What is their angle?

    Correction: …and arguably *better*) version…

Personally I have yet to put Freerange and Newsgator through the paces. Every time I install them they just seem clunky compared to Viigo. I will have to review them soon :)

Make sure you check the Web back-end that is provided by Newsgator Go. It is VERY good. You can read articles there, mark them as read and that is synchronized with your phone. They also provide a very nice Spartan Web page where you can browse and read your feeds with a mobile device browser. Heck, they even give you a POP3 box so you can download your feeds through e-mail!

The only thing that ruins NGG for me is that it won’t display images. :-(

It does not display images? Why not that is just plain annoying!
