Linux.com Helps With BlackBerry/Linux Synchronization

LinuxpenguinAs Joe Barr of Linux.com states marrying your BlackBerry with the penguin is a “Some assembly required” operation. So far there is no simple or straight forward package to sync your BlackBerry with Linux. On the other hand things have come quite far in the past few years thanks to the Barry and OpenSync projects.

Since I am no Linux expert I will defer to Joe’s description of the steps you need to go through to get your Berry to sync with Linux. It seems like there are a few distro components that you need to install first but Joe does a great job of explaining them.

The only other current resource I have found for Linux BlackBerry users has been the dedicated Linux corner on BlackBerryForums.com. They helped me get Barry installed in the first place and it is a great resource for newbies.

If anybody else has some good resources feel free to leave them as a comment.

For those not looking for synchronization but only the capability to load the battery of their Blackberry via the USB port and at the same time mount the BB memory card and make its content available in Linux, the easiest tool is most likely ‘acharge’, a quick hack by Nicholas J. Krut from the ‘bcharge’ source code:

It works beautifully with my BlackBerry Pearl 8100 and my Linux Ubuntu 7.04 desktop. Highly recommended.
