How To: Use The Google Talk Client To Translate Any Text

GtalktranslationI just read a post on GOS about a great feature that exists in Google Talk that I had never heard of before. It turns out that Google has translation Bot’s for over 18 different languages. All you have to do is add the translation Bot as a friend in Google Talk and send them what you want translated.

I get emails in Spanish and multiple languages all the time so this is a real score for me. The service is completely free and is not based on the BlackBerry browser so the responses are much quicker. The cool part is that you can invite the bot into a group chat in Gmail to translate the conversation for you. Sadly since the BlackBerry client does not support group chat you cannot do this on your device.

To access the Google Talk translation bots you just need to know the correct format for adding them as contacts. The way it is setup is:

[original_language]2[destination_language]@bot.talk.google.com

GOS has done us a service by listing the current available languages. The ones with an arrow back and forth support translation back and forth between the languages.

Below is the current available bots:

ar2en, en2ar (Arabic<->English)
bg2en (Bulgarian->English)
de2en, en2de (German<->English)
de2fr, fr2de (German<->French)
el2en, en2el (Greek<->English)
es2en, en2es (Spanish<->English)
fi2en (Finnish->English)
fr2en, en2fr (French<->English)
hi2en (Hindi->English)
hr2en (Croatian->English)
it2en, en2it (Italian<->English)
ja2en, en2ja (Japanese<->English)
ko2en, en2ko (Korean<->English)
nl2en, en2nl (Dutch<->English)
ru2en, en2ru (Russian<->English)
uk2en (Ukrainian->English)
ur2en (Urdu->English)
zh2en, en2zh (Chinese<->English)

    I had not problem adding this to the Google Talk client from Google and getting translation services.

    Glad to hear it worked for you. It has been a godsend since I get Spanish emails all the time and I can finally translate them to English from my BB. The best part is that it is completely free and I no longer have to browse to Babelfish
