Greg has uncovered an extremely addictive game for all you BlackBerry gamers. This is one of the most glowing reviews I have ever seen him write, making Magnetic Joe sound like the second coming of BrickBreaker. The controls are so simple a 4-year-old could pick the game up and play. Sadly, since there is no trial option for Magnetic Joe, you will have to take a leap of faith with this game. This game has turned my BlackBerry into a SlackBerry. What an addictive game. It seems that ever since I have downloaded Magnetic Joe, every bit of free time is taken up glued to the screen of my Curve (not that I wasn’t previously, but most of that was productive). Now I am in one of those positions that I can play games and still call it work (it is work, isn’t it, boss???).

The aim of the game is to navigate your way through a series of levels of mazes laced with spikes and magnets. You, (a small round ball with a face kind of resembling ‘Pac-Man’ on smack) have to guide yourself around the course using only the power of magnetic attraction and repulsion. When you depress your trackball, you become magnetic and are attracted or repelled by any magnets near you. Some of the magnets will push you in a direction indicated on them by arrows, whilst when you are in other locations, you will connect to 2 or more magnets at a time. It doesn’t sound like much, but trust me, this one is very, very addictive.

Controls are simple as there is only one. Pushing the trackball makes you magnetic and releasing it ceases your magnetism.

Just one problem was that every now and then your BlackBerry freezes up and has to load (lag time or buffer). Apart from that, download and gameplay are simple.

Just bear with the first few stages as they are short and so simply you could complete them with your eyes closed, but as the levels climb the harder it gets. I don’t know how many levels there are as I have not finished yet (the boss is cracking the whip on serious applications), but if work does rudely interrupt you, you can return to the level you left.

Pros:

  1. Good graphics
  2. Very Addictive
  3. Great Escape from work

Cons:

– No Version 2 released yet

Verdict:

Be very careful, this one could get you fired. You WILL miss appointments, meetings and weddings!

This is one of the most enjoyable games I have played in quite a while and will definitely make my DO NOT DELETE list of applications.
